HISTORY:
In 1942, the U.S. Army Air Forces' brand-new Air Transport Command began running the most audacious airlift of World War II: flying “The Hump.”
The Hump was the name given by Allied pilots in the World War II to the eastern end of the Himalayan Mountains which they flew military transport aircraft from India to China to resupply the Chinese war effort and the units of the U.S. Army Air Forces (AAF) based in China.
China Burma India Theater (CBI) was the United States military designation during World War II.
The Allies' aim in the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater was to supply and buttress Chinese armies in their struggle against a massive Japanese incursion. The enemy's seizure of China's seaports had severed its traditional supply lines. Accordingly, the Allies transported equipment, men and supplies to China through Burma by building roads and pipelines, and India by flying the "Hump" route over the Himalayas.
